What is the UCR Diabetes Prevention Program |
The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is a 1-year lifestyle change program based on research led by the National Institutes of Health. DPP is designed for non-diabetic, overweight individuals ages 18 and older who have pre-diabetes or are at risk for type 2 diabetes. This program provides education, encouragement, and the tools necessary to help individuals reach their health goals.
How Do I Participate in the Diabetes Prevention Program |
- DPP utilizes a CDC approved curriculum, trained lifestyle coaches, and group support over the course of a year. The hour-long classes are held once a week for the first three months, biweekly (every other week) for the next three months, and once a month for the last six months.
- The group sessions create a space for participants to discuss problem-solving strategies for overcoming common challenges to sustaining weight loss.
- DPP also focuses on self-monitoring of diet and physical activity and helps to build self-efficacy for maintaining lifestyle changes.
- The curriculum includes information on nutrition, ways to increase physical activity, stress management techniques, and ideas to stay motivated
- This program is free to participants and is available to UCR faculty and staff
